The second full day of touring in Italy we started to get a little more comfortable. For starters, we started a bit earlier and got some of the heavier touring done in the cooler part of the day. Bear in mind these pictures are in reverse chronological order again:

Timmy with his birthday cake. This was from the store down the road- and ice cream and frozen whipped cream cake. The ice cream was very hard lemon Gilatto, and the base of the cake was soaked in Limoncello. Timmy really liked the Currants on top. He ate quite a bit of this cake over the next couple days.

Here's Mommy and Timmy dipping their feet in the "Fountain of Four Rivers" in Piazza Navona. The fountain has four sources, each one supposedly representing the greatest river of each of the four continents- the Nile for Africa, Danube for Europe, Rio de la Plata for the Americas and I think the Ganges for Asia. This was the hottest part of the day, so Timmy and Mama certainly enjoyed the cool foot bath. Timmy had a great time splashing his feet and trying to pour some water on his head. He didn't want to leave and threw a mini-fit when we had to go, but as explained earlier, that was par for the course. This was also the plaza we bought a painting in a day or two earlier.

This was at lunchtime, when all three of us ate at a little restaurant on the main road not far from the Forum and Colosseum. The food was a bit pricey, but it was good. Italians eat in several courses, only one of which is pasta. Generally it goes like this: First course, Antipasti (appetisers). Second course, Pasta. Third course, Meat of some sort (or fish). Fourth course, Dessert. We only had the middle two courses at this restaurant (it was a special they had going on). Timmy ate off our plates like usual. About halfway through lunch, the guitar player came around and was playing some Italian songs for change. After getting a little bit of a tip, he came over and played a song for Timmy, then let Timmy pluck the guitar strings and pose for pictures. The guy was very nice, and Timmy had a blast making funny sounds!

The Collosseum was the highlight of the day. We had gone inside earlier than when this picture was taken. For some reason, the street was blocked off from vehicle traffic, so we got a nice picture with the Collosseum in the background. This was already well into the afternoon when this picture was taken, so you can tell Timmy's a little pooped.

After the Colloseum, we went into the archaeological site of the Roman forum. There was a lot of cool stuff, but Timmy was far more interested in the rocks on the ground that had no particular importance. He loved running through the intact tunnels, too- although sometimes his enthusiasm got him in a little trouble.

There was this fountain in the Forum site- It was midday and hot, so we decided to take mini-showers. All over Rome they have these public fountains that pump water out of the city water system, and tourists fill up water bottles and splash some over their heads whenever they get the chance. Timmy saw Mommy take a sip from the fountain and decided to give it a try himself. After nearly falling in a couple times, he got a little boost!

This was perhaps Timmy's favorite part of the Forum. As he passed under each archway, he counted it. 1... 2... 3.. 4... 5! Any time Timmy saw a tunnel (or bridge, or arch) or a staircase, he got excited and wanted to run and climb.

Timmy on another cool looking path in the Forum.

Here's the family inside the Collosseum. A nice Asian family saw us taking pictures and offered to snap a photo of all 3 of us. Timmy at this point was doing pretty well, but it didn't last long. For some reason, the Collosseum disagreed with him and he felt he needed to express his individualism a great deal.

This is us just entering the Collosseum. It was the first thing we did in the day, so we all had a lot of energy in the cooler-than-melting-point-of-flesh temperatures. Timmy was quite enthused when he saw all the tunnels!
