I'm trying pacifier-free again! It's a Monday, so hopefully we can get the week started out on the right foot. I just put Timmy up for his nap 5 minutes ago (at 8:10 a.m.). He is still crying. I'll do the standard cry-it-out time format- check on him every 10 minutes for a wet diaper, etc. I suspect it'll be noon and he'll still be crying.
8:20 a.m. First checkup: This could be going better. Timmy was on his belly screaming like a maniac. I put him back on his back, re-cranked the mobile and started the glow-worm up again. The glow-worm calmed the crying, but unfortunately it lasts only a few seconds. I just walked back downstairs and he's already screaming again.
8:30 a.m. Second checkup: What a mess. When I went upstairs, I found Timmy (still on his back) bunched up in the corner of the crib, nearly hyperventilating from crying so hard. I was afraid he'd seriously hurt himself, so I picked him up to calm him down. It took him a good 10 minutes to calm down enough to stop the gasping, and another 5 for him to stop crying. By the time he was done, though, he had fallen asleep on my shoulder- sans pacifier. I carefully placed him back into his crib, but this first attempt was aborted because he woke up almost immediately. Being the quick-thinking dad that I am, I picked him back up before he realized he wasn't on my shoulder and got him back to sleep again. I waited a bit longer this time, then set him down in the crib. So Timmy is currently sleeping in his crib without a pacifier. We'll see how long he sleeps for. I suspect as soon as the slightest thing wakes him up, it's game over.
9:37: Still asleep!
10:09: Timmy woke up at 9:55- not too shabby. What's more, he's in a good mood, too. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with not having a pacifier or not, but I'll take it. Next up: running without a pacifier.
1:40 p.m. Second Nap: Here we go again. I put Timmy down for his second nap, and he's starting out about as well as the last one. I just hope that eventually he gets the hang of the no-pacifier thing. Running without the pacifier went well- a few moans and groans, but nothing more than usual.
1:53 p.m. Success!: Just about the time I was getting ready to go back upstairs to check on Timmy, his crying started to slow down. So, I gave it another minute or so, and viola! No more crying! After taking 2 minutes to sneak upstairs (it's not that easy to sneak around up creaky stairs and across a creaky floor without waking the baby), I peeked in on Timmy to find him sleeping on his side. Then, I snuck back downstairs, grabbed the camera, and snuck back upstairs to get a picture (today's picture, above). I'll be interested to see how he does tonight.
9:28 p.m. Failure: So I got Timmy to bed tonight around 7:20 after a hard-fought, 40-minute battle without a pacifier. That is, until about 9:15. On our way to bed, the creaking of the stairs woke him up. For some reason, even though he would, on my shoulder, nod off then wake up repeatedly, he wouldn't sleep soundly enough to get back in the crib. Eventually I just had to give him the pacifier and send him on his way. I'll try again tomorrow.
